1) How do I know if I need a total knee replacement?

If the pain is preventing you from walking or performing daily activities and conservative measures have failed to give you adequate relief, it may be time to discuss TKR surgery with your surgeon.

2) How old is the average patient?

The average age of patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery is around 65-70 yrs. However, recent improvements in implant material and design may allow younger, more active patients to receive a total knee replacement and achieve good long-term functional outcomes.

3. What activities should I avoid after surgery?
  • Activities that require, twisting, or high impact loading (running, jumping, skiing, singles tennis)
  • Excessive or repetitive bending or squatting
  • Heavy lifting
  • Sitting on low surfaces (chairs, bathtub, toilet)
4. What are examples of activities?

Walking, swimming, dancing, golf, bicycling Let pain and swelling be your guide. If pain and swelling persist, stop the activity and consult with your surgeon.

5. Will my new knee replacement set off a metal detector?

It is unlikely that your implant will set off a metal detector. However, if it does, notify the security guard and they will pass a hand-held unit over your knee to verify. Ask your surgeon to give you a document that says: Artificial metallic implants inside your knee which may activate metal detector.
